Reported event

The Coast News reported that a man was fatally struck after leaving his vehicle to help following a September 12, 2026 crash on northbound I-5 near Leucadia Boulevard. Its account said the identity of the striking vehicle was not initially specified.

Separate the first crash from the later strike

The original collision and the subsequent pedestrian impact require their own timelines. Establish where vehicles stopped, what lighting or warnings were visible and when the person entered the roadway. The cause of the first collision does not automatically resolve responsibility for every later event. Scene diagrams should show both the original impact locations and the later path of approaching traffic.

Visibility must be reconstructed at the relevant time

Nighttime conditions should be evaluated using reliable records and observations, not a daylight visit alone. Camera angles, vehicle lighting and obstructions can affect what a driver could perceive. Any reconstruction should identify its assumptions about distance and timing. The fact that someone was helping others does not eliminate the need to examine the circumstances of the later strike.

Identify the correct vehicles and witnesses

Preserve contact details for people who saw the approach to the secondary impact. Drivers who only observed the first crash may have different information. Photographs, dispatch times and emergency records can help align accounts. A family should obtain advice about eligible claims and relevant parties while the investigation clarifies the identity and conduct of each participant.

Practical records to preserve

Keep original photographs and videos, the incident number, witness contact details and copies of insurer correspondence. Record when and from whom each item was obtained. For an injury, keep treatment information and documentation of missed work. These materials help an attorney evaluate evidence and losses; their existence does not establish fault or guarantee a recovery.
