Reported event

ABC7 reported a September 7, 2026 collision involving five vehicles on northbound I-405 near Getty Center Drive. One person died. The brief report did not identify the cause of the crash or establish fault.

Start with a sequence rather than a single diagram

Document the lane and movement of each car immediately before its first contact. A chain reaction can push a stopped vehicle into another without an independent negligent act. Video and damage patterns should be compared with the report’s narrative. A vehicle’s position after traffic was cleared may not identify the lane where its involvement began.

Evaluate avoidance opportunities individually

The distance and time available to one driver may differ from those available to another. A reconstruction should test perception, braking and lane changes against actual evidence. General statements that traffic was busy or fast are not measurements. Establish which witness observed which segment of the sequence and avoid treating all accounts as descriptions of the same impact.

A fatality does not resolve allocation of fault

Eligible family claims require both appropriate claimant identification and evidence connecting a defendant’s conduct to the loss. Other occupants may have separate injury or property claims. Policy identification and settlement decisions should be addressed only after the parties and losses are understood. A short initial news report cannot supply those answers.

Practical records to preserve

Keep original photographs and videos, the incident number, witness contact details and copies of insurer correspondence. Record when and from whom each item was obtained. For an injury, keep treatment information and documentation of missed work. These materials help an attorney evaluate evidence and losses; their existence does not establish fault or guarantee a recovery.
