A fall at a hotel requires identifying both the condition and the part of the property involved. A guest room, lobby, stairway, pool route, restaurant, and parking area may leave different records and involve different maintenance responsibilities.

Record the location beyond the hotel name

Keep the street address, stay or event dates, reservation information, and approximate fall time. Identify the floor, room or corridor, stairway, entrance, or other fixed landmark. A visitor attending a meeting or restaurant may have useful visit records even without an overnight reservation.

Document the walking surface safely

Photograph the condition and wider route if you can do so safely. For stairs, record the step, landing, lighting, and handrail without testing an unsafe area. For a wet surface, document what was visible and any warning. For a trip, capture the mat, threshold, carpet edge, or object involved without rearranging it.

Keep reports and maintenance communications

Ask how to report the event to hotel management or security and retain the incident number if one is supplied. Keep messages about a leak, lighting issue, housekeeping request, or other condition that relate to your event. Identify who said what and whether you observed the condition yourself.

Account for separate operators and shared areas

A branded hotel may involve an owner, operator, management company, restaurant business, or maintenance contractor. Save the names on your reservation and receipt. The investigation should identify who controlled the particular surface and who performed relevant work; signage alone may not resolve those roles.

Preserve relevant time windows

Your room-entry, checkout, event, or purchase records may help narrow the incident time, but each timestamp records a different event. Preserve originals and explain estimates. Ask counsel promptly about relevant surveillance and maintenance records; do not assume every area has cameras or that footage remains available indefinitely.

Discuss the claim and its practical next steps

Bring your photographs, reservation and visit records, report information, witness details, treatment records, and communications. Flag any release, payment offer, or approaching deadline. Weiss Attorneys offers phone and video consultations from Sherman Oaks; representation and fees depend on a written agreement.

The California Judicial Council civil jury instructions, including CACI 1000, 1003, and 1011, provide background on premises liability, unsafe conditions, and notice. See the California Courts explanation of filing deadlines and obtain advice about your circumstances. An incident report or insurer discussion does not replace a required legal filing.
