A fall at an AutoZone store can happen inside a parts aisle, at the checkout, near a returned-product counter, or along the route between a parked vehicle and the entrance. The first question is the exact condition that caused the injury. Weiss Attorneys helps California shoppers evaluate the available evidence and the next steps after a store accident.

Parts aisles, product containers and outdoor service areas
Record whether your foot slipped on a liquid, caught on an object, or encountered an uneven walking surface. If a container was nearby, photograph its position and condition without touching it. Do not assume the liquid was motor oil merely because the store sells automotive products. Describe its appearance, location and any information a witness actually observed.
AutoZone’s published location information lists services such as battery testing, tool loans and recycling. If your incident happened during a store service, keep the service details and identify where you were asked to stand. A parking-lot incident may require a different investigation from a fall inside an aisle. These are questions to investigate, not allegations about a particular branch.
Preserve the store number and the timeline
- Keep the receipt, pickup confirmation or service paperwork identifying the branch and time.
- Write down the aisle, counter or parking space involved and the route you were taking.
- Save original scene photos, witness details and your own account of what employees said.
- Report the incident to a manager and request the incident-report number or a copy if available.
- Keep medical records, bills, footwear and records of work missed after the fall.
For a returned container or dropped part, note who handled it and when. If an employee cleaned the area after the incident, describe what you saw, the equipment used and the approximate time. Later cleanup alone does not establish how long the condition existed before the fall.
What if the store does not provide video?
Tell the attorney the precise time window and the part of the store involved. Cameras facing a register, entrance or parking area may show a different part of the event. Footage can be unavailable, overwritten or outside the relevant angle. Preserve your request and the response; missing footage alone does not prove that a retailer caused the accident.
An attorney can evaluate appropriate preservation requests and ways to seek available inspection records, incident documents, video and witness testimony. Those materials are not guaranteed to exist or to be available without formal discovery.

A store fall requires an individual claim review
A fall does not automatically establish liability. A premises claim generally requires evidence of negligence by a party responsible for the property, an injury and a connection between them. The investigation may address who created a condition, whether the responsible party knew about it, and whether reasonable care should have discovered and corrected it.
The retailer, property owner or another party may dispute the hazard, notice, cause of injury or responsibility for the area. Claims and filing deadlines depend on the facts. Reporting an incident or negotiating with an insurer does not replace a lawsuit or preserve every deadline.
